Nancy Pelosi and Attorney General William Barr were headed for a massive showdown.
But then Barr pulled a rabbit out of his hat.
And now William Barr turned Nancy Pelosi’s world upside down with this announcement.
Nancy Pelosi approved a scheme by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to hold a contempt vote against Attorney General William Barr for refusing to hand the Democrats secret grand jury material from the Mueller report.
The Democrats were all set to proceed with the civil contempt vote to tarnish Barr’s reputation as the next step on the road to impeaching President Trump.
However, just hours before the vote, Attorney General Barr and the Democrats came to a surprise agreement.
The Department of Justice agreed to allow the members of the Judiciary Committee access to some of the underlying evidence in the Mueller report.
“I am pleased to announce that the Department of Justice has agreed to begin complying with our committee’s subpoena by opening Robert Mueller’s most important files to us, providing us with key evidence that the Special Counsel used to assess,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Nadler announced in a statement.
“If the Department proceeds in good faith and we are able to obtain everything that we need, then there will be no need to take further steps. If important information is held back, then we will have no choice but to enforce our subpoena in court and consider other remedies,” Nadler added.
“It is critical that Congress is able to obtain the information we need to do our jobs, ensuring no one is above the law and bringing the American public the transparency they deserve,” the House Judiciary Committee Chairman concluded.
But this is not a “win” for the Democrats.
Pelosi and her caucus demanded all of the unredacted material from the Mueller report.
They will not get anywhere near that.
Early reports indicate the Democrats settled for a few unredacted passages from the obstruction of justice volume of the Mueller report.
Even in accepting these scraps, the Democrats betrayed their true motivations.
Democrats didn’t even put up a real fight for the unredacted material on collusion.
That was supposedly the basis for this entire investigation.
But the truth of the matter is Mueller and the Democrats were just using collusion – which they always knew was fake – as a pretext to launch a wide-ranging investigation into the Trump administration to gin up groups for impeachment.
The Democrats hearings about the Mueller report are focusing exclusively on obstruction of justice.
Democrats aren’t even talking about collusion with Russia after spending two years fanning the flames of this now discredited conspiracy theory.
So this tactic will also fail.
There is very little chance of any “bombshells” being included in the redacted material.
When Mueller and his team leaked to the press how unhappy they were that their report did not generate enough negative media attention, they never once complained about key facts being hidden from the public in the redacted sections.
