Donald Trump was elected because of his hard-line stance on cracking down on illegal immigration.
The signature plank in his campaign platform was to build a wall on the Southern border.
And at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump revealed a secret that Rush Limbaugh told him about the 2018 elections.
In a rally at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, President Trump once again threatened to shut down the federal government over funding for the border wall with Mexico.
Establishment Republicans like Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell continue to side with the Democrats and oppose Trump’s efforts to include the wall funding in the September spending bill.
But Trump has continually argued that the Republican Party will have more leverage before the elections than after.
Trump declared “We are going to be taking some very tough actions. I don’t know if it’s before the election or after the election. You know a lot of the Republicans say, and they are good, they are good, we need more Republicans, and they are friends of mine, and they say president, you know –some of them are really tough guys —and they say, ‘Sir, we are better off if we wait until afterwards.”
“I say it’s better before. Let’s do it before. You know who thinks It’s better to do it before? Rush Limbaugh thinks it should be before, before the election. You know who else? Sean Hannity. A lot of them, great people. A lot of people, a lot of great Republicans, they are well-meaning. They say ‘look we have the best economy ever. We are doing great.’ Maybe they don’t want to complicate it. I understand it. You know I’m a little torn myself. I would personally prefer before (November’s midterm elections). But whether it’s before or after, we’re either getting it, or we’re closing down government. We need border security. We need border security,”
Donald Trump is correct on this count.
If swamp Republicans like McConnell and Ryan delay the fight until December, Democrats can just delay until the new Congress is seated in January.
If the Democrats win control of one of both houses of Congress, they can just wait out the lame duck GOP Congress and write new spending bills in January.
Establishment Republicans never want to fight.
And that is especially true on immigration.
But Trump pointed out conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity – who like Trump are more in touch with the GOP base than establishment RINOs like Ryan and McConnell – support Trump picking a fight over the border wall because that is what Trump was elected to do.
Ryan and McConnell have been stringing Trump along on the border wall funding since the first time Trump was presented with a government funding bill back in March 2017.
Establishment RINOs Ryan and McConnell always promise next time is when the fight will take place.
And when the next government funding deadline approaches they plead to punt to the following spending bill because they falsely claim a shutdown will hurt the GOP’s political prospects.
But Trump knows a fight over immigration will energize the GOP base and he appears to have lost all patience with Ryan and McConnell misleading him.
Do you think President Trump should shut down the government to win funding to build the border wall with Mexico?
