Rumors floated around Washington for months that 86-year-old liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg could retire.
Whoever replaces Ginsburg could cement the trajectory of American politics for the next 30 to 40 years.
And now all hell is breaking loose when the identity of the next Supreme Court justice leaked.
When a candidate runs for president, the standard rule is the day you enter the race and the day you quit the race are the two days where you get your best press.
No one likes to bury a candidate on their way down so the remaining candidates praise the competitor departing the race in the hopes of wooing whatever supporters that failed rival had.
But former Vice President Joe Biden took this to a different level with California Senator Kamala Harris.
Harris dropped out of the presidential race after her poor polling and fundraising numbers made it clear that Harris had no realistic path to the nomination.
Biden predictably suggested Harris could be his vice presidential selection.
As a black woman, Harris checked two demographic constituencies Biden would need to turn out in force if he won the nomination and hoped to defeat Donald Trump.
But Biden went even further by claiming he would consider Harris for a seat on the Supreme Court.
“We lost a really good one, the senator from California,” Biden told reporters. “She is capable of being president or vice president or on the Supreme Court or attorney general. Her capacity is unlimited.”
The 2020 Presidential Election could decide who picks Ginsburg’s replacement.
Ginsburg missed weeks’ worth of Supreme Court oral arguments over the past year due to multiple bouts of cancer and a fall where she broke her ribs.
Fake news reporters largely cover this up, but Ginsburg can barely function as a Supreme Court Justice.
Ginsburg routinely falls asleep during oral arguments and needs help getting on and leaving the dais the Justices sit on during court business.
The 2016 election ended up being a referendum on who the American people wanted to select as the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s replacement.
Donald Trump made this work to his advantage by releasing a list of all-star conservative justices to pick Scalia’s successor from.
This master stroke led to voters who put the Supreme Court as their number one issue breaking decisively 56 percent to 41 percent for Trump.
Former Vice President Joe Biden right now stands as the slight favorite to win the Democrat Party nomination.
But Biden inspires little enthusiasm from large portions of the liberal base.
Biden throwing Harris’s name out there as a possible Supreme Court nominee could preview that Biden intends to copy Trump’s 2016 strategy of telegraphing his Supreme Court picks as a way to motivate voters that are otherwise lukewarm toward his candidacy.
However, as the presidential race proved, Harris has little currency with grassroots Democrats so this gambit may not end up yielding much in the way of additional support for Biden.
