President Trump laid out his strategy for Republicans to win the midterm election.
But then an act of sabotage hit.
And Donald Trump learned some bad news that hit him like a gut punch.
President Trump designated the SAVE Act as his number one legislative priority.
The SAVE Act would require voter ID to cast a ballot and proof of citizenship to register to vote.
Trump declared that passing this bill would eliminate election fraud and allow Republicans to win a fair election in November.
“It will guarantee the midterms,” Trump told House Republicans during their retreat. “If you don’t get it, big trouble, my opinion.”
Trump asserted that terminating election fraud wasn’t a partisan issue, but it was a priority for the survival of the nation.
“Let’s go for the gold,” said Trump. “It’s actually a matter in a serious way of national survival. We can’t have these elections going on like this anymore.”
A democratic system of self-governance depends on the citizens accepting the results as legitimate, and the SAVE Act would give all Americans confidence that every voter is who they say they are and that they are American citizens, which is critical to the legitimacy of future elections.
The House passed the SAVE Act and sent it to the Senate, where President Trump urged Republicans to send it to his desk.
“They have to get it done,” Trump stated. “If it takes you six months — I’m for not approving anything…. I don’t think we should approve anything until this is approved.”
But the Senate defied Trump as four RINO – Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina voted with Democrats to block adding the SAVE Act to a must-pass reconciliation bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol.
Louisiana Senator John Kennedy led the effort to pass the SAVE Act through reconciliation, which meant Republicans could avoid a Democrat filibuster and pass the bill with a simple majority vote.
Kennedy expressed disappointment in his colleagues thwarting Trump’s will.
“I respect everybody in this body, everybody,” Kennedy remarked. “If you vote against this bill, I’m not going to say a word. And I’m sure as hell not going to go on social media and call you an ignorant slut. That’s not the way I roll, unless I’m pushed too far.”
Democrats gloated over defeating a bill that would have cut down on election cheating.
“We’ve already gone down this road for several weeks now to debate the so-called SAVE America Act,” California Democrat Alex Padilla exclaimed. “But I think, despite how you felt about the SAVE America Act, which certainly cannot pass the Senate, even my Republican colleagues would say the measure suggested by our colleague from Louisiana is an even more extreme version.”
