The 2020 presidential election is right around the corner.
And President Trump just got great news.
The Republican Party just picked up a massive win that could be a sign that Trump’s re-election is guaranteed.
Fueled by a wave of voters eager to stick it to President Trump, Democrats rode a wave in the 2018 election that allowed them to flip control of the House of Representatives for the first time since 2006.
But since taking control of the House at the start of this year, Democrats have seen their fortunes fade.
Not only has the party failed to either impeach President Donald Trump or stop his America First Agenda from pressing forward as full-speed, but Democrats are now being bombarded with signs that the 2020 elections may look nothing like the 2018 midterms.
And the first major red alert the party got came earlier this week when Democrats blew a special election congressional race they were sure was as good as theirs.
What’s worse, the special election took place in North Carolina, which Democrats expect could be one of the most hotly contested swing states in next year’s presidential election.
The AP has the story, “Conservative Republican Dan Bishop won a special election for an open House seat in North Carolina, averting a demoralizing Democratic capture of a district the GOP has held for nearly six decades. But his narrow victory didn’t erase questions about whether President Donald Trump and his party’s congressional candidates face troubling headwinds approaching 2020.”
Yet the AP only has half the story.
Rather than a sign that the President is in trouble, Bishop’s victory signals that Democrats are running out of steam.
That’s because Bishop was widely predicted to lose the special election.
And even President Trump pointed out how massive of a win this election was for the Republican Party.
“Dan Bishop was down 17 points 3 weeks ago. He then asked me for help, we changed his strategy together, and he ran a great race. Big Rally last night,” Trump tweeted.
Democrats needed to pick up this district.
It would have sent a sign that the party is ready to hold the House of Representatives and potentially recapture the Senate and White House as well in the process when the next election rolls around.
But instead, the Democrats’ defeat in North Carolina’s special election signals that the party may have reached a new high water mark, and that the 2020 congressional and presidential elections are anyone’s game.
“Along with a GOP victory in a second vacant House district in North Carolina, Republicans pared the Democratic majority in the House to 235-199, plus one independent. That means to win control of the chamber in 2020, Republicans will need to gain 19 seats,” adds the AP.
Every seat in the House of Representatives, plus one third of the US Senate and the Presidency will all be on the ballot in the 2020 elections.
