With the shutdown entering week two, neither President Trump nor Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer appear to be backing down.
But all of that may soon change.
President Trump just revealed something about his negotiations with Pelosi and Schumer that they hoped would never see the light of day.
The federal government shutdown is now poised to carry over until the new year.
But the White House is now saying Democrats are simply using the shutdown for political gain.
The Daily Caller reports, “White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders accused Democratic lawmakers of walking away from a potential deal to end a partial government shutdown.”
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the press that President Trump was working overtime to strike a deal, and he nearly made one before Democrats walked out and triggered a shutdown.
“The Administration understands this crisis and made a reasonable, common-sense solution to Democrats five days ago – we’ve not received a single response,” Sanders said. “The President and his team stayed in Washington over Christmas hoping to negotiate a deal that would stop the dangerous crisis on the border, protect American communities, and re-open the government.”
The deal would have included construction of a wall along the southern border with Mexico, as well as enshrining DACA — a political favorite for Democrats which would legalize children of illegal immigrants living in the country — into law. These two agenda items have long been major campaign issues for both President Trump and Congressional Democrats.
Rather than try to negotiate with the President, both Pelosi and Schumer publicly promised they would block even a single dime from going towards border security.
They met with the President, blew off his good faith attempts to strike a compromise, and then proceeded to brag about not getting anything done — all while blaming him for the shutdown.
But with the budget crisis now showing no sign of slowing down, the news coming from the White House may change the game.
Pelosi and Schumer lied when they said Trump caused the shutdown.
And every day the shutdown continues, they show just how far they’re willing to go in order to try and wreck President Trump’s agenda.
Even so, the news coming from the White House may change everything.
Pelosi and Schumer never wanted the details of these negotiations to get out to the public.
That’s why Pelosi wanted the press out of the room during her meeting with the President alongside Schumer.
With the cat out of the bag, the Democrats’ talking points about the shutdown being all Trump’s fault have completely fallen apart.
And since the vast majority of the federal government remains open, the effect of the shutdown on ordinary Americans is minimal at best.
The largest group affected by the shutdown are Pelosi and Schumer’s own supporters.
And with news that they walked away from a DACA deal now out in the public, there is yet another voter bloc that Pelosi and Schumer just alienated in order to spite the President.
As the shutdown continues, it’s clear Pelosi and Schumer are on the losing end of the political blame game.
