Senate Democrats are facing massive upheaval.
One of their leaders is now operating under the cloud of criminal scandal.
And this Democrat senator just resigned after getting arrested on bombshell criminal charges.
Prosecutors announced the indictment of New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menendez, his wife Nadine, and three businessmen on federal corruption and bribery charges.
The indictment contains almost cartoonish allegations of corruption accusing Menendez and his wife of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, a Mercedes convertible, and $100,000 in gold bars in exchange for policy favors, Menendez interfering in a criminal investigation and Menendez passing along sensitive U.S. government information to the Egyptian government.
Menendez is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senate Democrat bylaws dictate that “any member who serves in a leadership position in the Conference who is charged with a felony shall cease to exercise the powers and duties of his or her leadership position.”
The calls soon mounted for Menendez to resign his Senate seat as well.
New Jersey Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill is the conspiracy theorist who falsely accused Republicans of leading reconnaissance tours of the Capitol prior to January 6.
Sherrill is also one of the favorites to win Menendez’s seat should it become vacant.
And Sherrill was among the first Democrats demanding Menendez resign his office.
“These are serious allegations against Senator Menendez and if proven true, there is no room for this kind of conduct in public service. Today is a sad day for New Jersey and I believe it’s in the best interest of our state that Senator Menendez resign,” Sherrill wrote on social media.
New Jersey’s Democrat Governor, Phil Murphy, also called on Menendez to resign.

But Menendez and his family struck a defiant tone.
Menendez’s son Rob won election to Congress last year and released a statement professing his father’s innocence and declared his dad should remain in the Senate.
“I have unwavering confidence in my father and his dedication to the New Jerseyans who he has relentlessly fought for in his long career as a public servant,” Congressman Rob Menendez’s statement read. “I strongly believe in his integrity and his values and look forward to seeing him move past this distraction to continue fighting for our state in the United States Senate.”
For his part, Bob Menendez attacked Democrats calling for his resignation as racists who hate seeing Latinos achieve political power.
“It is not lost on me how quickly some are rushing to judge a Latino and push him out of his seat. I am not going anywhere,” Menendez declared.
