Democrats are gearing up for the 2018 midterm elections.
As part of that effort, Nancy Pelosi is barnstorming the country to campaign for Democrat challengers.
But at one campaign stop, Pelosi made what could be a fatal mistake by using this one word about a hot button issue.
The Democrat base is demanding their elected officials and candidates running for office pick a fight over Donald Trump’s America First immigration policies.
Far-left voters are insisting on open borders, amnesty and abolishing ICE.
Democrats are working to navigate those political currents while at the same time trying not to alienate voters in red states and red house districts that strongly support the President’s policies.
Nancy Pelosi demonstrated how difficult that balancing act can be.
At a press conference in El Paso, Texas, Pelosi declared that Americans should vote for Democrats as “leverage” for illegal aliens.
“We are not going to be able to get it done under the Republican leadership in Congress,” Pelosi stated. “We believe that we will have leverage when we win in November. And why that’s important?”
“Because it gives leverage to every family, to every mom who courageously brought her child across the desert to escape, to escape death, rape, gang violence and the rest,” the San Francisco Democrat exclaimed. “Because it gives hope, because of the leverage it gives to families who may have followed — dad may have gone home for a family funeral and now can’t come into the country. All of those injustices have to be corrected.”
To millions of Americans, the true injustice is that millions of illegal aliens have flooded the country and driven down wages for American workers.
Cheap illegal alien labor has made life more difficult for native born workers who have seen their opportunity to climb the economic ladder yanked away from them.
But midterm elections are contests of base mobilization.
And Democrats need to keep their base’s passion stoked before the November election.
That means Democrats need to keep up the drum beat for open borders, amnesty and abolishing ICE.
Many Americans will view this rhetoric and question why Democrats are putting the needs of illegal aliens ahead of Americans.
This is the same posture the Democrats adopted in the 2016 election.
Party strategists – as well as many members of the media – assumed Hispanic voters would doom the GOP in key states like Florida.
But Donald Trump won nearly 30 percent of Latino voters on the way to his surprise victory.
Some Democrats know they are walking into a trap on this issue.
Immigration was how Donald Trump was able to draw voters in 200 counties, that twice voted for Barack Obama, away from the Democrat Party.
The left will never be able to win these voters back as long as they continue to take extreme stances like the one articulated by Nancy Pelosi.
And by fighting the midterm election battle on terrain favorable to Donald Trump and the GOP, Democrats could be giving Republicans their best opportunity to hang onto their majorities in the midterm elections.
