Nancy Pelosi was once thought to be one of the most powerful people in Washington.
But her control over Congress is starting to crumble around her.
And now, she’s about to be overthrown as Speaker of the House for one unbelievable reason.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi entered 2019 on a high note.
She thought she was on the upswing after riding back into power on a Democratic wave that washed over the House of Representatives.
But she may be getting far more than what she bargained for now.
Because while Democrats were able to retake the House of Representatives last year, they remain far more radical today than ever before.
And Pelosi, who for years was portrayed as one of the most far left members of Congress out there, is now being viewed as a moderate within her own party.
The biggest divide that has gripped the party in recent months has been over the question of whether or not to impeach President Donald Trump.
Democrats used their hatred of the President to propel them into taking control of the House in the first place, but while polls routinely show an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose impeachment, Democrats remain bitterly divided over the issue.
Pelosi and her allies in Congress know that impeachment of the President is a political dead end.
Not only do Democrats lack the votes to convict Trump in the Senate and actually remove him from office, but Pelosi knows that igniting the firestorm that would come from such a move would almost certainly result in Democrats going down to defeat in the 2020 elections.
But half of her party wants impeachment at any cost, including their own political futures.
And now, Pelosi is losing control over her own party as more and more top Democrats defect to the pro-impeachment wing, endangering her position as Speaker of the House.
Politico reports, “Four more rank-and-file Democrats called for opening an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump on Sunday, inching lawmakers closer to a significant symbolic milestone: a majority of all House Democrats.”
This couldn’t come at a worse time for Pelosi, who just thought she had finally squashed all the calls for impeachment after the House of Representatives recently voted down a measure to begin the impeachment process in a landslide.
But the tide is beginning to turn against her.
“Though the steadily climbing total may not move Speaker Nancy Pelosi off of her resistance to opening a formal impeachment inquiry, Sunday’s burst of support suggests momentum behind the effort is growing and accelerating. More than a dozen Democrats — including Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), a member of Pelosi’s leadership team — have newly signaled their support since former special counsel Robert Mueller testified to Congress on Wednesday,” adds Politico.
It may only be a matter of time before Pelosi either loses the confidence of a majority of her own caucus, or has to relent to the pressure from her fellow Democrats to move forward with calling for impeaching the President.
And if that happens, the only person who stands to gain anything from all of it is Trump himself.
