Certainly, for worse, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become a phenomenon in American politics.
The youngest member of the House of Representatives, she’s just as well known for her age and inexperience as she is for her radical ideas.
And now, the congresswoman from New York is about to put herself on the map for being delusional.
The young congresswoman believes she’s a reincarnated Abraham Lincoln, or something like that.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wants Much Higher Taxes = Abraham Lincoln?
In an interview on 60 minutes with Anderson Cooper, set to air later on Sunday the 6th, the Freshman congresswoman says her idea for higher taxes may be radical, but they’re essential for redefining the American experience.
Ocasio-Cortez stated on Friday, Jan 4th, that she’d like to raise taxes on the wealthy to as high as 70%.
Cause you know, the wealthy “need to pay their fair share.”
Jack Davis writing for the Western Journal documented some of what she said.
“She said the massive tax increase is necessary to pay for her “Green New Deal,” CBS reported. The plan calls for the elimination of carbon emissions in 12 years.
“It’s going to require a lot of rapid change that we don’t even conceive as possible right now. What is the problem with trying to push our technological capacities to the furthest extent possible?” she said in the interview.
Change requires money, and the rich have it, she argued.
“You know, you look at our tax rates back in the 60s, and when you have a progressive tax rate system, your tax rate, you know, let’s say, from zero to $75,000 may be 10 percent or 15 percent, et cetera,” she said.
“But once you get to, like, the tippy tops, on your 10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent. That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate, but it means that as you climb up this ladder you should be contributing more,” she said.
How Is She Like Lincoln?
Ocasio-Cortez believes that her progressive ideas for higher taxes is reminiscent of how Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and how FDR passed the New Deal (which is partially true since it was a massive tax hike.
In the interview, Anderson Cooper plainly stated Ocasio-Cortez was proposing a “radical agenda.”
Ocasio-Cortez came alive and said, “If that’s what radical means, call me a radical!”
“Abraham Lincoln made the radical decision to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the radical decision to embark on establishing programs like Social Security. That is radical,” she said.
Sadly, if her ideas are adopted, it will likely set the U.S. back some years.
