The 2020 Democrat Presidential primary is wide open.
Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders surged in the polls while establishment Democrats panicked over his rise.
And then John Kerry took one phone call about 2020. That’s when Joe Biden burst into tears.
Former Secretary of State John Kerry is one of Joe Biden’s biggest supporters.
Kerry – the failed 2004 Democrat Party nominee – stumped across Iowa for Biden.
But the night before the Iowa caucus an NBC news reporter overheard Kerry on the phone frantically explaining to someone why it was too late for Kerry to jump into the 2020 race.
Kerry also told the person he was conversing with that socialist Senator Bernie Sanders would destroy the Democrat Party if he won the nomination.
NBC News exclusively reports:
Former Secretary of State John Kerry — one of Joe Biden’s highest-profile endorsers — was overheard Sunday on the phone at a Des Moines hotel explaining what he would have to do to enter the presidential race amid “the possibility of Bernie Sanders taking down the Democratic Party — down whole.”
Sitting in the lobby restaurant of the Renaissance Savery hotel, Kerry was overheard by an NBC News analyst saying “maybe I’m f—ing deluding myself here” and explaining that to run, he’d have to step down from the board of Bank of America and give up his ability to make paid speeches. Kerry said donors like venture capitalist Doug Hickey would have to “raise a couple of million,” adding that such donors “now have the reality of Bernie.”
Kerry angrily denied the NBC report initially tweeting out his denial with a profanity.
The former Secretary of State deleted the tweet with foul language and replaced it with a response to NBC that contained PG language.
“As I told the reporter, I am absolutely not running for President. Any report otherwise is categorically false. I’ve been proud to campaign with my good friend Joe Biden, who is going to win the nomination, beat Trump, and make an outstanding president,” Kerry tweeted.
There is no chance Kerry would get in the 2020 race.
The most likely explanation for the story was Kerry was trying to calm down a frantic supporter and explain why it was implausible that the former Secretary of State could mount a Presidential campaign.
But the mere fact that a supporter with access to John Kerry’s personal cell phone was frantically searching for an alternative to Sanders demonstrates the level of anxiety of Democrat Party elites.
Many Democrats now believe the Presidential nominating contest will extend past Super Tuesday.
That is a dangerous development for Democrats that hoped Biden could score a quick knockout and wrap up the race so Biden could quickly transition to general election mode by unifying the party and raising money.
The longer the primary drags on, the more divided Democrats will be with the clock ticking toward Election Day.
