Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer thought he had an ace up his sleeve to guarantee Democrats win control of the Senate in November.
But Schume’s plans may yet get foiled.
And John Kennedy just smacked Chuck Schumer with the worst news of his life.
Senate Republicans are set to hold a vote on the SAVE Act.
The SAVE Act would mandate proof of citizenship to vote, as well as purging illegal aliens from state voter rolls.
In addition, the SAVE Act would crack down on mail-in-ballot schemes that blue states allow for weeks on end, which conservatives believe allow Democrats to manufacture enough ballots to tip close races.
Republicans argued the SAVE Act is vital to preserving American democracy.
“Public trust in the integrity of our elections is essential for the legitimacy of our democratic institutions,” bill sponsor Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) stated. “A vast majority of our countrymen agree: only American citizens should be able to register and vote in American elections.”
The SAVE Act would end any voter fraud schemes run by Democrats that Republicans argue give Democrats an unfair advantage in elections.
The issue is passing the bill through the Senate, where Chuck Schumer and the Democrats will attempt to filibuster the bill.
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) told Fox News that Republicans had work to do, but that passing the bill wasn’t “insurmountable.”
“I think that most Republicans would vote for it. I would,” Kennedy stated. “Now, you know, we’ve got a few free-range chickens on the Republican side. We may have to gather them up. The question will be which, if any, Democrats would vote for it. I think we’d have to do some work there. But it’s not insurmountable.”
The SAVE Act’s chances increased when Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) revealed that President Trump was on board with Senate Majority Leader John Thune deploying parliamentary tactics to pass the SAVE Act with just 51 votes.
Luna wrote on X that in exchange for conservatives supporting a government funding bill, Thune would require Democrats to stage a standing filibuster.
“Just left the White House. POTUS wants the SAVE America Act passed! Voter ID is number one. Today, Schumer said he wants mass amnesty for all illegals and to immediately stop all ICE efforts,” Luna wrote.
“After speaking with many senators, as well as directly with POTUS, the pathway forward is through the standing filibuster. This would effectively keep the government open while allowing Republican senators to break through the “zombie” filibuster and put the SAVE America Act up for a vote on the Senate floor,” Luna added.
Currently, Senators just have to state their intention to filibuster a bill to require 50 votes to secure passage.
A standing filibuster means Democrats will have to hold the floor and speak continuously.
But each Senator is only allowed two speeches.
Once those Senators exhaust their speeches, the Senate can pass the SAVE Act with just 51 votes.
Luna went on to say that this is the only path forward to passing the SAVE Act and securing fair elections.
“The standing filibuster is not common parliamentary procedure, but it is one of the only mechanisms available to go around senators who want to block voter ID,” Luna concluded.
