John Fetterman has a habit of making a bad situation worse.
That’s exactly what Fetterman just did for Chuck Schumer and his fellow Senate Democrats.
And John Fetterman confessed one truth that has Democrats on edge.
John Fetterman stunned the Democrat Party by being the first member of his party to call on Bob Menendez to resign.
Fetterman went on radical MSNBC host Joy Reid’s program and compared Menendez to Tony Soprano – the iconic lead character from HBO’s “The Sopranos,” a show about a mafia family in New Jersey – after federal prosecutors indicted Menendez on corruption charges.
“Honestly, I was actually surprised that I was the first one. I mean, it’s so black and white. I mean, it’s so clear. The last time there’s ever been a man with so much cash in their home in New Jersey was Tony Soprano. You know? I mean, it’s not a— it’s not a— it’s not a close call, and if you were looking for the most incriminating kinds of evidence, nobody could even come up with gold bars in a mattress. So, and again, he’s entitled to have his day in court, but he is not entitled to remain in the Senate and he needs to go,” Fetterman stated.
Details from the Menendez indictment sounded like they came straight out of “The Sopranos” as FBI agents found $480,000 in cash stuffed in jewelry boxes and envelopes as well as $100,000 in gold bars as part of a search of Menendez’s home.
“Obviously I don’t speak for anyone else in the Senate [other than] myself, but what I can say is that, you know, he has to go,” Fetterman added.
Fetterman then finally got to the meat of the matter.
The Pennsylvania Democrat admitted his call for Menendez’s resignation was based in ruthless political calculation.
Menendez is up for re-election in 2024.
The New Jersey governor can appoint any old Democrat to take Menendez’s place and win the seat in a rocking chair-type race.
But if Menendez runs for re-election under the cloud of a criminal indictment on bribery charges then it puts the seat in play in an election cycle when Democrats already face difficult races in Ohio, Montana and West Virginia.
“New Jersey is a safe, blue seat, and they have a governor ready to appoint somebody that’s ready to step in and make the kind of votes that he needs to do. And again, it’s never been about him. It’s about the Senate and the integrity and he needs to go,” Fetterman continued.
John Fetterman’s number one concern is not the integrity of the Senate – if it were, then Fetterman wouldn’t insist on showing up to work in shorts and a hoodie.
Fetterman’s call for Bob Menendez to resign is nothing more than a political salvage operation to help the Democrats maintain power next year.
