Joe Biden tried to use the State of the Union speech to reset his failing presidency.
But Biden ran into one giant stumbling block.
Joe Biden picked this fight with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that he will live to regret.
Biden entered his State of the Union address facing record-low poll numbers.
Instead of offering a message that all Democrats could rally around and speak with one voice in support of heading into the midterm election, Biden annoyed the socialist base of the party.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez left the State of the Union fuming.
Appearing on MSNBC after the speech Ocasio-Cortez complained that Joe Biden did not talk enough about the Communist Green New Deal that is the centerpiece of Ocasio-Cortez’s policy wishlist.
“It was a lost opportunity because there is … bipartisan support for a long-term shift away from fossil fuels,” Ocasio-Cortez whined. “We need to hear more about our transition to clean energy beyond weatherizing our windows.”
Not mentioning the Green New Deal was a significant retreat for Joe Biden.
Large chunks of that scheme to turn America into a socialist nation were included in the nearly $5 trillion big government spending bill that died after West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin announced his opposition.
But Ocasio-Cortez was not the only Democrat that left the speech up in arms.
At one point in the State of the Union speech Joe Biden attempted to distance Democrats from support for defunding the police.
“We should all agree, the answer is not to defund the police. The answer is to fund the police with the resources and training they need to protect our communities,” Biden exclaimed. “I ask Democrats and Republicans alike, pass my budget and keep our neighborhoods safe.”
Party leaders know defunding the police is a sure-fire political loser in the midterm elections.
But the ideological socialists in the party refuse to give up on the hobby horse because they truly are anti-cop.
Freshman Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush is one of the loudest voices in Washington supporting Black Lives Matter and defunding the police.
And Bush made her displeasure known on social media.
“With all due respect,” Bush ranted. “You didn’t mention saving Black lives once in this speech. All our country has done is given more funding to police. The result? 2021 set a record for fatal police shootings. Defund the police. Invest in our communities.”
Joe Biden can’t cut cord between Democrats and support for defunding the police because Congresswomen Bush and Ocasio-Cortez proudly support gutting law enforcement.
Bush and Ocasio-Cortez aren’t just backbenchers.
These two are rising stars in the party with large social media followings which means that they speak for the base of the Democrat Party.
And try as Joe Biden might, Democrats will always be seen as the party of defunding the police because Ocasio-Cortez and Bush demand it.
