Donald Trump was waiting for this moment.
It was a moment of vindication.
And Joe Biden made an election concession that left Donald Trump grinning from ear to ear.
Donald Trump and Joe Biden rarely agree on anything.
But after the Virginia gubernatorial election both were singing from the same sheet of music.
Donald Trump endorsed Republican Glenn Youngkin on multiple occasions and when Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe for the first GOP statewide win in Virginia since 2009, Trump boasted that the massive turnout of the MAGA base lifted Youngkin to victory.
“I would like to thank my BASE for coming out in force and voting for Glenn Youngkin,” Trump exclaimed. “Without you, he would not have been close to winning. The MAGA movement is bigger and stronger than ever before. Glenn will be a great governor. Thank you to the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia and most particularly, to our incredible MAGA voters!”
McAuliffe turned out 200,000 more voters than Democrat Ralph Northam did in Northam’s eight-point win in 2017.
But the GOP base turnout blew that out of the water.
Working-class, non-college educated voters form the backbone of Trump’s coalition.
And Youngkin swamped McAuliffe 76 to 24 percent with this vital demographic.
Shortly after Trump’s statement, Biden’s handlers allowed Biden to hold a rare – and brief – press conference to respond to the Democrat wipeout in Virginia.
Not only did Republicans win the governor’s mansion, but the GOP also won the lieutenant governor and attorney general’s races as well as flipping the House of Delegates to Republican control.
In his remarks, Joe Biden admitted the GOP base turnout overwhelmed the Democrats in Virginia.
“I think it should have passed before Election Day, but I’m not sure that I would be able to have changed the number of very conservative folks who turned out and the red districts who were Trump voters. But maybe,” Biden told reporters.
Youngkin rejected the GOP establishment playbook of avoiding culture war issues.
Instead, Youngkin opposed vaccine and mask mandates.
Youngkin also savaged Democrats for their slavish devotion to the teachers’ unions who kept schools closed for no reason at all and damaged children’s educational development.
And finally, Youngkin leaned into the fight over transgender bathrooms and critical race theory.
One of Youngkin’s biggest applause lines was a promise to ban critical race theory from Virginia classrooms and to stop dividing students along racial lines.
Democrats hoped that with Trump not on the ballot to spur GOP turnout, the party could hang on to control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in next year’s midterm election.
But the Virginia off-year gubernatorial election tends to foreshadow what happens in the following midterm election.
And both Donald Trump and Joe Biden agree that the Trump base is poised for a big turnout to deliver a rebuke to the Democrats’ socialist agenda.
