But since leaving office, he’s watched the Democratic Party fall off a cliff.
And now, Reid just said one thing that could spell doom for Democrats in 2020.
Harry Reid served as Senate Majority leader for years under President Obama.
And having been in office for decades, the former Nevada Senator emerged as one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington.
While he left office after retiring in 2016, Harry Reid remains a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and one of the most powerful politicians in Nevada.
But when looking at the current Democratic field, Reid only had stern criticism to offer.
He knows, despite his own strong liberal leanings, that Democrats who are running against President Trump for the 2020 presidential election are promising things they can never possibly deliver to the voters.
And Reid pulled no punches in making sure his frustrations were well known, slamming the entire Democratic field for their pie-in-the-sky aspirations and for misleading voters into thinking they have the votes in Congress to get even half of their promises across the finish line even if they defeat Trump.
“Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the far-left positions of some Democratic presidential candidates are jeopardizing the party’s chances of beating President Trump in 2020,” reports the Washington Examiner.
“The longtime elected official from Nevada, in a Vice News interview, specifically blasted proposals to provide ‘Medicare for all’ and to decriminalize illegal crossings from Mexico into the U.S.”
For Reid, he knows that Democrats are about to take the party over the edge.
And there’s little he can do but sound the alarm before it happens.
When asked about the emerging Democratic proposals to decriminalize illegal border crossings and adopt a complete government takeover of the entire healthcare industry, Reid slammed both ideas as not only politically stupid, but impossible to execute.
“How are you going to get it passed?” Reid asked.
“Reid also called for a more moderate approach to countering illegal immigration, implicitly criticizing the border decriminalization approach advocated by 2020 Democrat Julián Castro, a former San Antonio mayor and Housing and Urban Development secretary,” adds the Washington Examiner.
He knows, having represented a key swing state for decades in the Senate, that Democrats could be throwing away any chance of winning the 2020 election if they go down this route.
And yet despite his warnings, it seems like his party is bound to do exactly that.
With Reid now out of office, there’s only so much influence he can still wield.
And he knows it too.
Which is why his warnings are likely going to fall on deaf ears as Democrats compete with one another to move the furthest to the left as possible.
Do you think Democrats are about to throw away their chances of defeating Trump in 2020?
