The last year has seen a lot of upheaval at Fox News Channel.
Management hoped the waters would calm as 2021 dragged on and the election faded from view.
But Fox News employees were up in arms over this major network change.
Fox News engaged in a hiring spree.
After falling to last place in the cable news ratings race in January after conservative competitor Newsmax ate into Fox’s audience, Fox hired Lara Trump as a contributor and former Trump press secretary Kayleigh McEnany as the new co-host of “Outnumbered.”
But Fox was not done.
The network announced it hired former Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with a contributor contract.
Pompeo’s hiring triggered some of the liberal staffers embedded at Fox.
“Oh get the $%^& out of here,” a Fox staffer told the website Mediaite.
Others complained that Pompeo was just trying to raise his national profile with conservatives ahead of Pompeo’s widely expected 2024 presidential campaign.
“Nauseating,” another Fox insider told Mediaite. “This is so needless. He would have come on the channel anyway.”
“He’s obviously just trying to get more exposure before his 2024 run,” a third staffer added.
This is not a new path.
In 2012 Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum jumped from Fox News into the presidential race and Mike Huckabee followed suit in 2016.
Others at Fox acknowledged the fact that Fox does not want to get outflanked on its right again by Newsmax and was just giving the audience what it wanted.
“There is a desire among the Fox audience to hear from these former Trump officials, and the further we get from Jan. 6, the network is eager to welcome these voices,” a Fox employee explained.
Other Fox staffers found it understandable that former Trump officials would seek employment at Fox due to the fact that woke corporations eagerly seek to cancel anyone that worked for President Trump.
“Trump officials have mostly become pariahs in the private sector,” another Fox staffer added. “But apparently, they’re all welcome at Fox.”
A recent Washington Post report found that no companies of the S&P 500 companies that submitted financial disclosure forms for 2021 hired a former Trump official for their board of directors.
“While the small numbers make comparisons difficult, corporations don’t seem to have an immediate interest in other top Trump administration alums either. Roughly half of the S&P 500 companies have filed their 2021 investor disclosure reports, listing a total of 108 new or prospective board members, according to data from Insightia, which provides information to shareholders. No Trump Cabinet officials who served in the final quarter of his term are among those nominated,” the Post reported.
Despite the whining from Fox’s liberal employees, Pompeo’s hiring makes sense.
Pompeo held one of the crown jewel positions in the federal government and can speak to issues and events from a perspective that few share.
And while he is likely eying a presidential run, he is just an opinion contributor and not a news anchor.
