Chuck Schumer shut down the government because he thought he could bully Donald Trump into accepting amnesty for illegal aliens.
It was a move that had beaten other Republicans into surrender.
But it ended up being the worst mistake of Chuck Schumer’s life.
The Democrats engineered a 60-hour shut down of the federal government to try and force Trump to accept amnesty for illegal aliens and block any attempts at pro-American immigration reforms.
Schumer and the Democrats had used threats of government shutdowns in the past to block any attempts at Republicans passing their priorities in the budget so they thought they were playing a winning hand.
They were wrong.
Trump hammered the Democrats on social media for putting the interests of illegal aliens ahead of those of Americans and risking the nation’s security by not funding the military.
Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration. Can’t let that happen!

The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens. Not good!

By midday Monday the Democrats had a humiliating retreat.
They voted to reopen the government and pass a short term funding bill in exchange for a vague promise from Mitch McConnell to vote on an immigration bill.
Democrats were demoralized.
Democrats have managed to accede to Republican demands, demoralize their energized base, give a disengaged president a win, and look like they held a meaningless three day government shutdown — all at once.

Any drop in Democrat enthusiasm would be lethal to their midterm election chances.
Control of Congress will be determined by which base is more fired up to turn out and vote.
Democrats could see a drop off after their leaders were humiliated by Trump and failed to achieve their central policy goal of winning amnesty for illegal aliens.
