Republicans panicked they would lose the suburbs over this issue and made noise about passing red flag gun confiscation orders and a national gun registration database system.
However, after the horrible tragedy in Midland and Odessa where a disgruntled loner opened fire at multiple traffic stops after he lost his job, President Trump told one very important truth.
New gun control – specifically expanded background checks – would not have stopped any of the mass shootings gun grabbers exploited to demand new gun control.
“I will say that for the most part, sadly if you look at the last four or five going back even five or six or seven years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it,” President Trump told reporters.
Gun grabbers push for expanded background checks because they want to ban private sales of firearms between friends and family members.
Parents and neighbors aren’t equipped to perform the background checks mandated at gun store purchases so requiring a background check would end the tradition of parents passing down their firearms to their children.
Anti-gun members of Congress and members of the fake news media threw up their arms in outrage.
The Washington Post accused President Trump of “caving” into the pro-Second Amendment organizations.
But President Trump realized one simple fact.
His base strongly supports gun rights and that is an issue they vote for.
President Trump campaigned on putting a stop to attacks on the Second Amendment and the President built a bond with his base because he fulfills every promise that he can.
Had President Trump gone back on his word, he would be toast in 2020.
Democrats knew this.
And the left tried to bait President Trump to bite on a morsel of gun control that would cost the President the 2020 election by depressing Republican base turnout.
Once a Democrat was in the White House, gun grabbers could get down to their real business – banning and confiscating every firearm in America.
But by rejecting new gun control, President Trump decreased the chances of that nightmare turning into a reality.
