Democrats have tied their political fortunes to Iran.
Americans had never seen anything like the display put on by Nancy Pelosi and her allies in confronting Donald Trump over his Iran policy.
But the Democrats took one big gamble on Iran that just blew up in their faces.
Democrats were furious to learn that President Trump gave the order to eliminate terrorist Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Soleimani commanded the Iranian Quds force and was the architect of Iran’s global terrorist proxy network.
In addition, Soleimani’s hands were drenched with the blood of over 600 American soldiers Iranian proxy forces killed under his command.
Democrats could not celebrate this success for Americans because it occurred on Donald Trump’s watch.
Instead, they mourned Soleimani and mouthed pro-Iranian government propaganda.
In the aftermath of the American victory, Pelosi sought to undermine the President and offer support for the Iranian regime by putting a war powers resolution on the floor for a vote to limit President Trump’s ability to respond to Iranian aggression.
In a “Dear Colleague” letter Pelosi wrote:
Last week, the Trump Administration conducted a provocative and disproportionate military airstrike targeting high-level Iranian military officials. This action endangered our servicemembers, diplomats and others by risking a serious escalation of tensions with Iran.
As Members of Congress, our first responsibility is to keep the American people safe. For this reason, we are concerned that the Administration took this action without the consultation of Congress and without respect for Congress’s war powers granted to it by the Constitution.
This week, the House will introduce and vote on a War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran. This resolution is similar to the resolution introduced by Senator Tim Kaine in the Senate. It reasserts Congress’s long-established oversight responsibilities by mandating that if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration’s military hostilities with regard to Iran cease within 30 days.
President Trump urged all Republicans to vote against this unconstitutional measure.
“Hope that all House Republicans will vote against Crazy Nancy Pelosi’s War Powers Resolution. Also, remember her “speed & rush” in getting the Impeachment Hoax voted on & done. Well, she never sent the Articles to the Senate. Just another Democrat fraud. Presidential Harassment,” the President wrote on social media.
Just like impeachment, the bipartisan message coming out of this vote was more Democrats bailed on Pelosi than abandoned Trump.
Eight Democrats stood up for the Constitutional principle that America only has one Commander-in-Chief and rejected Pelosi’s symbolic gesture.
Just three Republicans voted with the Democrats.
This was another bipartisan rebuke of Nancy Pelosi’s “hate Trump all the time” strategy.
A failed political stunt to impeach the President to appease your base ahead of an election is one thing.
But a vote to align the U.S. Congress with Iranian talking points that killing Suleimani was an illegal act of American aggressions crosses a bridge over into disloyalty.
