Impeachment is now reaching the courts.
This is uncharted territory.
And all hell broke loose when this Supreme Court justice faced impeachment.
Republicans in Wisconsin are preparing to impeach radical left-wing Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz.
Protasiewicz won election to the bench this past April and flipped control of the Court to a 4-3 liberal majority.
In the campaign, which saw $51 million spent with most on Protasiewicz’s behalf, Protasiewicz mobilized the Democrat Party base by decrying the state legislative congressional district maps drawn by the Wisconsin GOP legislative majority in 2011 “rigged” and “unfair.”
Republicans hold a 64-35 majority in the State House and a 22-11 advantage in the State Senate.
In short order left-wing activist groups filed legal challenges to the maps and Republicans began coalescing around the move to impeach Protasiewicz if she did not recuse herself from the case because Protasiewicz made her political bias clear during the campaign.
Powerful Republicans in Wisconsin blessed the move pointing out that Protasiewicz crossed a line into partisan activism.
“If she does not remove herself from the case, the members of the State Assembly should vote to impeach Justice Protasiewicz,” former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker stated.
“She obviously should recuse herself from any redistricting case, and if she doesn’t, the Legislature has the ability” to impeach Protasiewicz, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson told The New York Times via text message. “I hope they would.”
If Republicans succeed in impeaching Protasiewicz in the State House and the Senate convicts her prior to December 1 then Wisconsin Democrat Governor Tony Evers would have to name a replacement who will face the voters in an election in April that coincides with the Republican presidential primary.
Wisconsin’s Republican Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, said the GOP majority must consider impeachment due to Protasiewicz’s partisan bias that was on display for all to see.
“When you’re saying that one side has rigged maps, you have made a decision that maps in her opinion are biased, which is the point of the whole case,” Vos said in an interview with The Associated Press. “She shouldn’t have said what she did, but she did. And now she has to own it.”
The Democrats’ view on legislative maps is that unless any map cements a permanent liberal majority, they are illegitimate.
Protasiewicz expressly campaigned on the theme that electing her to the bench means a guaranteed new Democrat majority in Wisconsin.
But Republicans in Wisconsin sought to avoid this with a legislative compromise that would allow for a nonpartisan commission to draw the maps and if the commission’s map was rejected twice by the courts, then the legislature would get to draw a map.
Governor Evers rejected this proposal as he knows the new liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will impose a district map completely biased towards the Democrats.
This is leaving Republicans no choice but to proceed with impeaching Justice Protasiewicz.
