Fani Willis’ scandals keep getting worse.
The Fulton County district attorney doesn’t know who she can count on.
And one ally just flipped on Fani Willis in this brutal way.
Fani Willis is under fire for her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade who Willis hired to help run point on the Trump 2020 election witch hunt.
Trump co-defendant Michael Roman filed a motion arguing Judge Scott McAfee should disqualify Willis from the case based on a conflict of interest and misuse of taxpayer funds.
CNN’s legal analyst Elie Honig authored an op-ed arguing that the allegations against Wade are serious and could cause the entire case against Trump and his co-defendants to get tossed out.
“For over a year now, Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis’s prosecution of former president Donald Trump has been headed toward the shoals. In the past few weeks, the wind has picked up, and it looks like the whole case might run aground. The situation is already bad down in Georgia, but it’s about to get worse,” Honig wrote.
Honig wrote there are valid questions about why Willis hired Wade in the first place.
Wade never handled a case above the misdemeanor level.
And Wade filing for divorce from his wife one day after his contract with the Fulton County DA’s Office started reeked of suspicious timing.
Wade billed Fulton County for $654,000 between 2021 and 2023 – a billing rate Roman alleged was higher than the other prosecutors Willis brought onto the case – and bank records show Wade purchased airline and cruise ship tickets for the two.
Honig argued this could add weight to the claims Willis and Wade enriched themselves at the taxpayers’ expense while working the Trump case.
“How much of Wade’s income has been spent on Willis?” Honig added. “We don’t know the exact nature of their relationship; Trump and others allege it’s romantic, and neither Willis nor Wade has denied it. They allegedly traveled together, on Wade’s dime, to Napa Valley, Florida, and the Caribbean, and on both Norwegian and Royal cruise lines. Whatever the specifics of the relationship, the problem here is that Wade has used public funds paid to him by the DA’s office to pick up the tab for personal expenses for himself and Willis.”
Honig also shot down Willis’ claim that she is the true victim here and that her critics are only attacking her because of racism.
Willis – Honig pointed out – is an elected official responsible for millions of dollars in taxpayer money and accountable to her voters.
Honig wrote that if it’s proven true that Willis financially benefited from this case while violating Donald Trump and his co-defendants’ constitutional rights then she deserves everything coming her way.
“Despite her claim that she’s ‘being treated cruelly,’ the district attorney is no victim here,” Honig continued. “Willis is not some civilian plucked out of obscurity and targeted for sport. She chose to run for office as Fulton County DA, and now she holds almost unimaginable clout; she controls tens of millions of taxpayer dollars and holds the awesome power to strip individuals of their personal liberty. If the district attorney wields the power of her office to do favors for her friends, to enrich herself, and to undermine the constitutional rights of her charged defendants, then she has earned the consequences.”
