If there is one thing everyone on the right can agree on, it’s that a Clinton Presidency would likely be one of the most disastrous things to happen to the United States this century.
And while Trump has been polling quite favorably against Clinton recently, some of that support has eroded in the past week.
Part of this is Trump’s own doing as some off the cuff remarks left a sour taste in supporters’ mouths.
And another part is because of a motivated faction of GOP delegates who’s desperate to see Trump’s nomination rescinded.
“Members of ‘Free the Delegates’ — the movement that tried using party convention rules to snatch away the nomination and install another candidate — said Sunday that they’re reaching out to members of the RNC, which includes three representatives from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and territories, asking that they sign a petition calling for an emergency meeting that would lead to Trump’s ouster.”
Counted among the members of the Free Delegates are hundreds of convention delegates.
The fact this is happening with roughly 100 days until election does not bode well for Trump and his chances for winning.
Analysts note because there so much discord amongst GOP supporters it could indicate a fall for Trump.
That’s because this mutiny likely means the activists attempting to remove Trump as the standard bearer could cause the GOP to splinter and cause Hillary’s election.
As the Hill writes: “Current and former GOP lawmakers, former government officials, and top-flight party consultants have said they’re leaving the party or will vote for someone else.”
Could you imagine what that would to do Conservative’s chances of keeping Clinton out of office? Honestly it would be catastrophic.
How exactly does this all work?
According to Republican Party rules if members of 16 states unify they can cause RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to perform an emergency meeting for the recall of Trump as the standard bearer for the GOP.
This meeting would need to occur within 10 days of the 16 states members issuing the challenge. Once the meeting is convened the members of the Free Delegates would ask the members of the RNC to invoke Rule 9, a rule that lays out the options for nominating a new candidate (the criteria necessary being resignation, death, or other circumstances.)
These other circumstances according to the Free Delegates are that recent behavior by Trump is enough to have him recalled as well as a protest they were given no other option to vote for at the convention.
According to the party rulebook, the RNC is “authorized and empowered to fill any and all vacancies which may occur by reason of death, declination, or otherwise of the Republican candidate for President of the United States or the Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States.”
That means if Trump is the RNC could opt to hold a new convention or select a new candidate by holding a vote among themselves.
What do you think of this?
Is this kind of tension in the Republican party signaling trouble ahead?
Or is this just a fringe group of activists who have no real chance of seeing their wishes realized?
