A political embarrassment for the Democrats is now a full-on catastrophe.
This is entering uncharted waters.
And that’s because an arrest warrant was just issued for this key Democrat official.
Texas Republicans are taking action against the Democrats who fled the state in order to block a vote on an election integrity bill.
Speaker of the House Dade Phelan signed a civil arrest warrant against one Democrat after he fled the state, then returned claiming he wanted to negotiate with Republicans – only to flee again.
“Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, signed a civil warrant for the arrest of state Rep. Philip Cortez, a San Antonio Democrat who rejoined his colleagues in Washington, D.C., on Sunday to help prevent the passage of a GOP-backed election bill,” the Texas Tribune reported.
This warrant means that when Representative Cortez finally returns to Texas, law enforcement will take him into custody and transport him to the Capitol so he can’t flee again.
Speaker Phelan said Representative Cortez “has irrevocably broken my trust and the trust of this chamber” after he had “represented to me and his fellow members that he wanted to work on policy and find solutions to bring his colleagues back to Texas.”
The Speaker claimed Cortez left the floor of the Texas State House under false pretenses.
“As a condition of being granted permission to temporarily leave the House floor, Rep. Cortez promised his House colleagues that he would return,” Phelan stated.
“Instead, he fled the state.”
Representative Cortez claimed fleeing was “a duty to my constituents to do everything I can to stop this harmful legislation.”
The modest Texas election integrity legislation enhances voter ID laws for mail-in ballots, blocks officials from mailing unsolicited ballots by making it a criminal offense, and also bans 24-hour drive-in voting.
Cortez falsely claimed this legislation would restrict Texans from voting.
“I will continue fighting for my constituents to ensure fair and full access to the ballot box,” Representative Cortez said. “All Texans deserve nothing less.”
But polling from Echelon Insights showed 47 percent of Americans support going back to the pre-pandemic methods of voting, while just 41 percent backed the Wild West approach favored by Democrats during the pandemic – mailing ballots to all voters, ballot harvesting, and 24-hour drive-thru voting.
The Texas Democrats who fled aren’t only on the wrong side of the issue – they’ve created a political nightmare.
The 58 Texas State House Democrats posted pictures of themselves on a private plane with cases of Miller Lite celebrating.
Their problems only got worse when six of the supposedly fully-vaccinated Democrats tested positive for coronavirus and infected one member of Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris’ staff.
Of course, when the Texas Democrats first fled the state, the corporate media billed them as heroes and freedom fighters.
After they turned out to be coronavirus super-spreaders, the press was quick to drop the story.
And while Representative Cortez is the first of them to face a civil arrest warrant when he returns, he likely will not be the last.
Democrats plan to wait it out in Washington until the current special session in Texas ends on August 6.
But Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised to call special sessions one after another to force the Democrats to choose between living their lives at home or remaining on the lam.
That war of attrition will likely end in the GOP’s favor.
