The 2020 Presidential election just reached a massive turning point.
Former Vice President Joe Biden had reasserted his position as the Democrat Party frontrunner for the nomination.
But now all hell is breaking loose after Joe Biden was caught red-handed in this bonehead lie.
The Democrats held their final debate before the February 3 Iowa Caucuses.
The debate focused in part on foreign policy which was to be expected after Democrats spent weeks mourning the death of terrorist Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Former Vice President Biden’s support for the Iraq War became a flash point in the debate as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders hit Biden for supporting the disastrous Iraq War.
Biden stood in front of the CNN TV audience and flat out lied in response by claiming his 2002 vote in favor of an authorization of use of military force was only to force Iraq to allow in inspectors to assess their weapon of mass destruction program.
“It was a mistake to trust they weren’t going to go war,” Biden falsely claimed. “They said they were not going to go to war … the world, in fact, voted to send inspectors in, and they still went to war. From that point on, I was in the position of making it was a big, big mistake. And from that point on, I moved to bring those troops home.”
Biden’s own words proved that to be a lie.
In a December 2003 speech at the Brookings Institution, then-Senator Biden claimed the risk of allowing Saddam Hussein to remain in power was greater than the risk of doing nothing.
“Some of my own party have said that it was a mistake to go to Iraq in the first place. They didn’t believe that it’s not worth the cost, whatever benefit may flow from our engagement in Iraq. But the cost of not acting against Saddam, I think would have been much greater,” Biden stated.
Biden also implored President George W. Bush to use the bully pulpit and make the case to the American people that the Iraq War was worth the cost in blood and treasure.
“The President of the United States is a bold leader and he is popular. The stakes are high and the need for leadership is great. I wish he’d use some of his stored up popularity to make what I admit is not a very popular case. But, I and many others will support him,” Biden said.
By 2005 Biden still hadn’t turned against the war.
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Biden criticized President Bush for not pursuing the war aggressively enough.
“It was a mistake to assume the president would use the authority we gave him properly,” Biden exclaimed. “We gave the president the authority to unite the world to isolate Saddam. And the fact of the matter is, we went too soon. We went without sufficient force. And we went without a plan.”
In 2016 Democrats nominated Hillary Clinton who was a strong supporter of the Iraq War.
Donald Trump drove a wedge between Clinton and some traditionally Democratic voting constituencies with his opposition to the Iraq War and other nation-building adventures supported by Clinton.
If the Democrats nominate Biden, President Trump is well-positioned to exploit Biden’s past support for endless wars.
