Freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in trouble.
She’s had a rocky first term in Congress, and things aren’t getting any easier.
Now Ocasio-Cortez just got some disastrous news about the 2020 congressional races.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, leader of the “The Squad,” the quartet of far-left freshmen congresswomen, has had a rough year.
She’s made one gaffe after another.
After stumbling through a tame interview with Republican Margaret Hoover, Ocasio-Cortez opted only to engage in the softest of softball interviews.
That didn’t stop her from getting pilloried for dumb tweets and getting upstaged after asking dumb questions in congressional hearings.
She might have also violated campaign finance law by paying her boyfriend with campaign money.
Her inane Green New Deal, the blueprint for a communist takeover of the American economy, was so widely mocked, she and her team had to pull it down from her website and edit it.
Even union support for the bill was non-existent.
The proposal was ultimately defeated in the Senate 57-0.
These mistakes have led to potentially grim news for Ocasio-Cortez: she could be in jeopardy of losing her seat after just one term.
Ocasio-Cortez is facing a primary challenge from several Democrats, and if she gets through the field, she could be facing off against a Republican that might be able to appeal to voters in the district.
Even though it’s a reliably blue district, Ocasio-Cortez is wildly unpopular.
She might be a darling on the national stage, but people in her district do not like her.
They’ve criticized her for both not being present in the district (there’s speculation that she listed an address outside her district), and not doing anything for the district.
In fact, Ocasio-Cortez made a move that cost her constituents thousands of possible jobs.
Ocasio-Cortez killed a deal for Amazon to open a new facility in her district, which would’ve brought all kinds of industry.
Ocasio-Cortez stupidly killed the deal because she didn’t know the difference between a subsidy and a tax break.
She believed that tax breaks going to Amazon was actual cash flowing out of the district’s coffers.
She wanted to use that “money” for schools, but quickly learned that there’s nothing to tax if you scare off the business.
The bad news doesn’t stop there for Ocasio-Cortez.
A recent poll among Democrats showed that 74% of respondents knew who she was, but only 22% had a favorable view of her.
Ocasio-Cortez has also created enemies in her own party, essentially butting heads with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
All of these missteps could potentially put Ocasio-Cortez in serious jeopardy of losing her seat.
Another aspect working against her is the way in which she won her seat in the first place.
She unseated long-time congressman Joe Crowley, but in large part due to incredibly low voter turnout.
If enough people are angered by the Amazon debacle, they could show up to the polls and strike a serious blow to Ocasio-Cortez’s political future.
