Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez makes no bones about the fact that she does not see serving in the House of Representatives as the pinnacle of her career.
Now the whispers about her next move grow louder.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may leave the House of Representatives to take this new job.
Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez never refuted the speculation that she eyed a seat in the U.S. Senate.
Ocasio-Cortez refused to rule out challenging Chuck Schumer in a 2022 primary.
But now Democrat Party insiders in New York State speculate that Ocasio-Cortez could primary and defeat New York’s other Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
“’There are any number of state lawmakers, local officials and members of the delegation –including AOC — who could mount a very, very credible challenge and quite likely beat her,’ the ex-staffer said, adding that his once vigorous former boss now seemed ‘bored’ in the Senate and is missing in action statewide,” the New York Post reported.
Disgraced former Governor Eliot Spitzer appointed Gillibrand to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton after Barack Obama named Clinton his secretary of state.
Democrats in New York speculated that the threat of a primary challenge could push Gillibrand to retire instead of running for re-election in 2024.
“’It wouldn’t at all surprise me if there were truth to the rumors that she’s not planning to run, but instead is on the lookout for an administration position or a cushy private sector job,’ the insider added,” the Post also reported.
Gillibrand’s never been popular on the left.
When Gillibrand represented a conservative, rural district in New York, Gillibrand bragged about owning firearms and opposing illegal immigration.
Gillibrand abandoned all of those positions to become a conventional leftist once entering the Senate and developing national ambitions.
But Gillibrand also faces criticism in New York for the simple fact that Gillibrand does not tend to her home base.
“’I see [senior NY Sen. Chuck] Schumer all the time. I never see Gillibrand. I don’t know why New York only has one senator,’ sniffed one Democratic state senator,” the Post reported.
If Ocasio-Cortez did challenge Gillibrand in a 2024 primary Democrats in New York believe Ocasio-Cortez would win.
“Longtime city Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf agreed: ‘AOC can beat Kirsten Gillibrand. AOC will raise the money. She can beat her because Kirsten Gillibrand is the invisible senator. She has done very little to cement that incumbency and the electorate is angry and she has done nothing to address the issues that matter — which are COVID, crime and job loss in New York State,’” the Post’s story read.
Ocasio-Cortez is one of the biggest stars on the left.
The Democrats adopted the socialist agenda in large part because of Ocasio-Cortez’s ability to leverage her massive social media followings to drive the policy conversation on the left.
Few expect Ocasio-Cortez to remain in the House forever.
However, many assume her ultimate goal is to skip over the Senate and launch a presidential campaign in 2024 or 2028.
