House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s defeat on impeachment only steeled his desire to bring down Donald Trump.
Now Schiff and his allies are moving on to phase two of their plan.
And now Adam Schiff wants to jail these Trump allies. Trump will be red with rage.
During the impeachment witch hunt the President asserted the time-honored authority of executive privilege.
Some key Trump officials such as former National Security Advisor John Bolton, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Office of Management and Budget official Russ Vought honored the Constitutional principle of separation of powers and did not show up to testify when the Democrats subpoenaed them.
Democrats cited the President asserting executive privilege – the same privilege every President dating back to George Washington took advantage of – as the grounds for an article of impeachment.
Adam Schiff and other Democrats claimed these witnesses possessed key information that could have pushed the Senate to convict President Trump.
After the Senate acquitted President Trump, Democrats still demanded their pound of political flesh.
Since Democrats largely abandoned their political witch hunt investigations after they proved to be political losers, Adam Schiff and other Congressional leaders hatched a plan to hold Trump officials that ignored subpoenas in contempt.
CNN reported:
Lawmakers involved in the discussions told CNN that they believe that the individuals who ignored their lawful subpoenas should be held in contempt, arguing that they should be held accountable for refusing to comply with compulsory orders as Democrats probed whether Trump leveraged his office in pushing Ukraine to announce investigations potentially beneficial to his electoral prospects.
At the same time, some Democrats who had been pushing hard for Bolton to testify in the impeachment inquiry are showing little appetite now to pursue his testimony amid the possibility that it could lead to a court fight and also distract from the party’s election-year messaging.
Democrats could try to make this a criminal offense.
But that would require the House Sergeant at Arms to place these Trump officials into custody.
The more likely scenario is the contempt vote would be a show vote and exhibition in political theater.
Republicans staged a similar vote holding then-Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for not turning over documents pertaining to the Fast and Furious gun running scandal.
Democrats are more vicious and ruthless than Republicans.
If they wanted to hold Trump officials in contempt, Schiff and his gang of partisan pit bulls would go all-in for criminal charges.
That would thrill the Democrat base which could come in handy to motivate the rank and file and turnout this November not just for the Presidential contest, but to keep Democrats in charge of the House of Representatives.
Democrats want to make sure they can show their voters that they did not come up empty-handed in the impeachment hoax.
The only arrow left in their quiver is contempt votes.
