Donald Trump wants to run for president again in 2024.
Republicans are confronting that reality.
And this Fox News host made a surprising confession about what Republicans really think about Trump.
The January 6 kangaroo court is holding their show trial hearings.
Fox News “Special Report” host Bret Baier asked Fox Senior Political analyst Brit Hume if the committee’s goal was to refer Trump for criminal prosecution or to discredit Trump as a 2024 presidential candidate.
Hume responded that the two goals were not mutually exclusive as the committee staged the hearings like an opening statement in a criminal prosecution to accomplish both of those goals.
“Well, I think they’re doing both,” Hume stated. “Jamie Raskin, one of the committee members has said, you know, part of what they’re doing is to create something that can be referred to the justice department for possible prosecution.”
But Hume added that many Republicans secretly hoped the committee succeeded in either pushing the Biden Justice Department to indict Trump or to sully his image with the public and render him a crippled 2024 candidate.
Hume explained that establishment Republicans think Trump could lose in 2024 – of course these same “experts” said the same thing in 2016 – and are hoping Democrats take out Trump ahead of the next election.
“What strikes me about this, Bret, is that if they succeed – either by damaging him or staining him such that he is either unable or for legal or for political reasons to run again – they might end up finding out that they’ve done the Republican Party a great service, because I think a great many Republicans think they can’t win with Trump at the head of the ticket again. They are afraid of his supporters and don’t want to come out against him directly. But they’d like him to go away. If the effect of this committee is to make his possible candidacy go away, I think a great many Republicans would privately be very glad,” Hume added.
Donald Trump gives no indication he intends to sit out the 2024 election.
And January 6 Select Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson revealed the committee will not refer Trump or anyone else for criminal prosecution.
/2 Thompson: “That’s not our job. Our job is to look at Jan. 6. What caused it and make recommendations after that… We don’t have the authority.”

Democrats will be furious at this announcement.
But so will many establishment RINOs that hail from the Mitt Romney/George Bush wing of the GOP.
These swamp RINOs are terrified to take on Trump because they know GOP voters stand with Trump.
So, establishment RINOs instead are quietly rooting for Nancy Pelosi’s January committee to exile Trump from American politics.
