Barack Obama is still the spiritual leader of the Democrat Party.
When Obama speaks on an issue, the rest of the party is likely to follow.
And you won’t believe what Barack Obama said about the police.
In the 2020 election, Republicans shocked all the so-called “experts” by flipping 15 Democrat-held seats in the House of Representatives.
One of the keys to the Republicans’ success was the GOP’s ability to tag Democrats with the “defund the police” position held by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and other radical Democrats.
Instead of junking the defund the police policy, Barack Obama is trying to show Democrats a different way to talk about the issue so they can hide their true intentions from the voters.
Obama is now pushing Democrats to “reimagine” policing by supporting using civilians and mental health professions to respond to 9-1-1 calls.
“More places are experimenting with programs that send civilian responders instead of police to help people experiencing mental health crises. It’s a promising development in law enforcement in the wake of this summer’s protests,” Obama wrote on social media.
Obama linked to a USA Today article claiming the cities of Olympia, Denver, and Eugene experienced success with this approach.
In the article, USA Today claimed using civilians as opposed to police would reduce deaths at the hands of police officers because of the number of calls involving the mentally ill.
“Up to 50% of fatal encounters with law enforcement involve someone with a mental illness, a 2016 study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine estimated. And nearly 1 in 4 people fatally shot by police since 2015 had a mental illness, including a disproportionate number of people of color, according to a Washington Post database of fatal shootings by on-duty officers,” USA Today reported.
Using civilians to respond to 9-1-1 calls was a “reform” proposed by advocates of defunding the police.
But Obama is trying to employ rhetoric that will promote the same policy, but in a less threatening manner to voters.
It’s easy to see why defunding the police is unpopular.
And despite the fact that the base of the Democrat Party supports it so strongly, defunding the police is especially unpopular with minority voters.
That’s because Americans understand that if you defund the police, who is going to answer a 9-1-1 call when someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night?
That’s not a job for a mental health counselor.
Despite the fact that Joe Biden is the President, Barack Obama still sets the rhetorical pace for the Democrat Party.
Last summer at John Lewis’ funeral, Barack Obama attacked the filibuster as a relic of Jim Crow.
Now that line is standard issue Democrat Party fare.
Obama is hoping “reimaging police” is a successful replacement for defunding the police.
