Election night 2022 featured one of the biggest shockers in recent history.
There were some bright spots for Republicans.
And this top Republican delivered a massive win that was the final nail in Barack Obama’s coffin.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the one Republican that overperformed on election night.
Polls showed DeSantis would win by 10-12 points over Democrat challenger Charlie Crist.
Instead, Governor DeSantis set a record for the biggest re-election win in Florida history crushing Crist by 19 points and over 1.5 million votes.
DeSantis won heavily Hispanic Miami-Dade County – which DeSantis lost by 18 points in 2018.
And DeSantis did not just improve his margins with Latino voters solely by running up the score with the heavily Cuban population – which leans conservative in South Florida – DeSantis massively improved his vote totals in Osceola County which is home to a large Puerto Rican population.
On NBC the so-called “experts” marveled at DeSantis winning the Hispanic vote despite DeSantis supporting strong border security policies and opposing amnesty.
NBC marvels at DeSantis winning a majority of Latinos.
They’re kind of shocked to realize they’re not a monolith. Chuck Todd says a Dem consultant told him they need to stop “trying to treat them as African Americans, as if there is one issue that will somehow unite [them].” pic.twitter.com/MeX69rEg3x— Nicholas Fondacaro (@NickFondacaro) November 9, 2022
Just 10 years ago Barack Obama carried Florida for the second time, running up the score with Hispanic voters and supercharging black turnout.
Some on the left believed in a permanent realignment where the “coalition of the ascendent” – college-educated whites, single women, and minority voters – would cement a permanent majority for Democrats.
On election night NBC analyst and former RINO Florida Congressman Carlos Curbelo declared DeSantis’s massive win meant the Obama coalition was dead and Florida was now a red state.
“Florida, Florida, Florida, right? That’s a word that’s been said many times in these studios in nights like this and I think what we’re seeing now raises two important questions,” Curbelo stated. “Number one, is Florida still the perennial swing state? It doesn’t look like one tonight, it looks like Republicans are solemnly putting Florida in their column and then number two, the Obama coalition.
“Hispanics, Obama put so much work into growing that Hispanic vote in Florida and the Democratic Party. Look at the numbers in Miami-Dade, they are staggering,” Curbelo continued. “Is the Obama coalition broken? Can Democrats continue to align that coalition, and the early numbers tonight, it looks like the answer might be no. Of course, we got to see what happens with the rest of the country.”
