Barack Obama threw his support in this election fully behind Joe Biden.
Former Vice President Biden is hoping Obama campaigning for him will prove decisive in the November election.
But Barack Obama threw a curveball into the 2020 election with one decision.
The coronavirus pandemic is the number one issue in the election.
Joe Biden wants to make this election a referendum on President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
To that end, Biden’s seized on President Trump’s joke at a Tulsa rally where he said he told “[his] people [to] slow the testing down” because more tests show more coronavirus cases.
The President tried to make the point that the media harped on case numbers – which can be a function of more testing – as the be-all and end-all and ignored other metrics such as the declining fatality rate which showed the United States effectively confronted the pandemic.
Former Vice President Biden cited the growing number of cases in Arizona as evidence of the President supposedly ‘failing’ to lead during the pandemic by ordering a slowdown of testing.
Biden also falsely claimed that “the crisis in Arizona is the direct result of Donald Trump’s failure to lead and his desire to ‘slow the testing down,’ and Americans are suffering the consequences.”
Biden also demanded the administration “immediately resume operating federally-managed community-based testing around the country and establish multiple sites in Arizona.”
There is no evidence President Trump actually told anyone to slowdown coronavirus testing, and in fact, the number of coronavirus tests conducted in America continues to increase to where now over 700,000 tests are conducted daily.
But there was one administration that did order to stop testing during a pandemic.
And it was Barack Obama during the 2009 swine flu pandemic that gave the order to cease testing for the virus.
Fox News unearthed a CBS report from 2009 that showed Obama ignored his experts and the science by stopping H1N1 testing because his administration claimed everyone knew there was an outbreak.
“In late July, the CDC abruptly advised states to stop testing for H1N1 flu, and stopped counting individual cases,” CBS News reported. “The rationale given for the CDC guidance to forego testing and tracking individual cases was: why waste resources testing for H1N1 flu when the government has already confirmed there’s an epidemic?”
“Some public health officials privately disagreed with the decision to stop testing and counting, telling CBS News that continued tracking of this new and possibly changing virus was important because H1N1 has a different epidemiology, affects younger people more than seasonal flu and has been shown to have a higher case fatality rate than other flu virus strains,” CBS added.
Critics contend Obama stopped the testing because the rising case counts made his administration look bad.
If Joe Biden plans on attacking Donald Trump’s management of the pandemic and approach to testing, he will have to answer questions as to why the Obama administration actually shutdown testing during a pandemic.
