Ron DeSantis dropped a major 2024 bombshell.
Republicans were waiting for DeSantis to answer this question.
And now Ron DeSantis made a major announcement that Tucker Carlson could not wait to share.
Tucker Carlson invited the six leading contenders for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination to share their thoughts on funding Joe Biden’s proxy war against Russia.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was one of the Republicans who responded to a questionnaire Carlson sent out.
As the governor of Florida, DeSantis is not asked to weigh in on global affairs.
That DeSantis chose to announce his position on Ukraine on Tucker Carlson’s show was significant for two reasons.
First, it was yet another sign that DeSantis is running for president.
Second, and more importantly, revealing his position on Ukraine funding with Carlson showed that in the foreign policy debate DeSantis was on the side of the “America First” agenda of Donald Trump and not with the war hawks in the GOP establishment.
DeSantis explained that America has many vital national security interests — checking the rise of Communist China and securing the southern border — but defending Ukraine is not among them.
Ukraine — DeSantis declared — is a distraction from those priorities.
“While the U.S. has many vital national interests – securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party – becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them. The Biden administration’s virtual ‘blank check’ funding of this conflict for ‘as long as it takes,’ without any defined objectives or accountability, distracts from our country’s most pressing challenges,” DeSantis wrote.
DeSantis added that the only objective for U.S. policy in Ukraine is peace and that he opposed sending the Ukrainians long-range missiles and F-16 fighter jets that could be used to launch offensives into Russia.
The Ukrainians using American weapons to attack targets inside of Russia would assuredly bring the United States and Russia into direct conflict.
“Without question, peace should be the objective. The U.S. should not provide assistance that could require the deployment of American troops or enable Ukraine to engage in offensive operations beyond its borders. F-16s and long-range missiles should therefore be off the table. These moves would risk explicitly drawing the United States into the conflict and drawing us closer to a hot war between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. That risk is unacceptable,” DeSantis continued.
DeSantis emphasized the absurdity of fighting to secure Ukraine’s border while Joe Biden left America’s border wide open to disastrous consequences.
“We cannot prioritize intervention in an escalating foreign war over the defense of our own homeland, especially as tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year from narcotics smuggled across our open border and our weapons arsenals critical for our own security are rapidly being depleted,” DeSantis added.
Funding the war in Ukraine appears to be a major fault line in the 2024 GOP primary.
Nikki Haley and Mike Pence are running to be the GOP establishment’s candidate in this race and they are all-in on Ukraine.
Donald Trump and DeSantis are running to be the conservative candidate and they expressed extreme skepticism towards Joe Biden’s Ukraine policy.
