Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has Fox News in his sights.
Schumer thinks he is holding all the cards.
And now Chuck Schumer issued one threat that could take Fox News off the air.
Dominion Voting Systems filed a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News Channel.
The voting software company sued Fox News for reporting on claims made by Trump supporters like Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell that Dominion voting machines switched votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — the top two Democrats in Congress — seized on the lawsuit and issued a threatening letter to Fox News demanding massive changes at the network.
“The leadership of your company was aware of the dangers of broadcasting these outlandish claims,” the letter read. “By your own account, Donald Trump’s election lies were ‘damaging’ and ‘really crazy stuff.’ Despite that shocking admission, Fox News hosts have continued to peddle election denialism to the American people. This sets a dangerous precedent that ignores basic journalistic fact-checking principles and public accountability.”
Schumer and Jeffries then falsely claimed Tucker Carlson went on TV and promoted Powell and Giuliani’s claims.
The two Democrats went so far as to issue an ultimatum demanding Fox News read a series of talking points that Schumer and Jeffries could approve of.
“We demand that you direct Tucker Carlson and other hosts on your network to stop spreading false election narratives and admit on the air that they were wrong to engage in such negligent behavior,” Schumer and Jeffries added.
In fact, that is not true.
Carlson went on the air and told viewers he invited Sidney Powell to come on his show and share proof to back up her claims.
But Carlson informed his audience that Powell refused to come on the show and refused to provide evidence of her allegations.
Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham also never promoted conspiracy theories about Dominion voting machines.
Fox News responded to the lawsuit by declaring that Dominion’s court filing cherry-picked the juiciest quotes and took them out of context to indict Fox News as a propaganda network.
“Dominion’s lawsuit has always been more about what will generate headlines than what can withstand legal and factual scrutiny, as illustrated by them now being forced to slash their fanciful damages demand by more than half a billion dollars after their own expert debunked its implausible claims. Their summary judgment motion took an extreme, unsupported view of defamation law that would prevent journalists from basic reporting and their efforts to publicly smear FOX for covering and commenting on allegations by a sitting President of the United States should be recognized for what it is: a blatant violation of the First Amendment,” Fox News’s statement read.
But Schumer and Jeffries persisted anyway and claimed Fox News threatened to overthrow American democracy and the only way to get back in the good graces of the Senate majority leader and House minority leader would be for Fox News to renounce Donald Trump and adopt the Democrats’ narrative on January 6.
“As evidenced by the January 6 insurrection, spreading this false propaganda could not only embolden supporters of the Big Lie to engage in further acts of political violence, but also deeply and broadly weakens faith in our democracy and hurts our country in countless other ways,” Schumer and Jeffries added.
Schumer is the Senate majority leader meaning he controls the Chamber’s calendar.
Joe Biden nominated pro-censorship fanatic Gigi Sohn for a spot on the Federal Communications Commission.
Sohn’s tweeted that the government should regulate conservative media outlets like Fox News.
If Fox News executives fail to order Carlson and other hosts to read a script that Schumer approves of, he could ram Sohn’s confirmation through and threaten Fox News with censorship and investigations.
